Why Do Astronauts Wear Orange On Take Off and Landing?

Astronauts have a mixture of clothes needed for missions. When on the space shuttle they are able to wear Earth clothes however, a critical part of their kit is two space suits.

What is the orange suit called and used for?

The orange suit is called the Advanced Crew Escape Suit (ACES)

The Advanced Crew Escape Suit (ACES) worn during space shuttle ascent and entry is distinctively orange and specifically designed in the shade known as International Orange. This highly visible color provides easy identification against any landscape, particularly in the sea.

The primary purpose of the ACES is to aid astronaut survival in the event of any accidents during take-off or landing.

The orange suit includes a parachute ripcord and a knife for emergency situations. The ripcord is used to deploy the parachute on the astronaut's back, and the knife is available to cut the parachute cords should the astronaut become trapped. The suit also has a life raft that automatically deploys upon contact with water.

The survival kit within the orange suit is similar to those used by hikers and includes a radio, motion sickness pills, strobe lights, flare kits, and mittens, all of which function effectively in Earth's atmosphere.
