Astronauts have various clothes and specialist suits in their wardrobe. Within the confines of the space shuttle the air pressure, temperate and humidity are controlled so that astronauts can live comfortably. This means that they are able to wear the same clothes they would on Earth.
There are other suits that are required for takeoff/landing and space walks.
The white suit is called the Extravehicular Activity (EVA) suit.
The EVA suits worn during extravehicular activities (space walks) are designed to be bulky and white in color. This is because white reflects the intense heat of the sun and is easily visible against the dark background of space.
To ensure survival in the harsh conditions of space, the white suit is equipped with a water cooling system. This system utilizes recycled body sweat to keep the astronaut cool during a spacewalk that could last up to six hours. Additionally, an in-suit drink bag filled with water is provided.
The primary life support system in the white EVA suit includes a survival kit. This kit is equipped with ample supplies of oxygen, battery power, and a radio, necessary for communication and survival during the challenging conditions of space.
