What is a planet?

In 2006, the International Astronomical Union voted on the definition of a planet.

A planet is a celestial body that
  • Is in orbit around the sun,
  • has sufficient mass for its self gravity to overcome rigid body forces so that it assumes a hydrostatic equilibrium (nearly round shape), and
  • has cleared the neighbourhood around its orbit.
In more layman's terms:
  • A planet must orbit the sun
  • Have enough self gravity to create a nearly round shape.
  • Have a clear orbit path.

Up until the new definition Pluto was classed as a planet within our solar system. It is now defined as a Dwarf planet.
