f you find yourself stranded in outer space with a sudden hankering for pizza, there is a solution - just follow in the footsteps of Yuri Usachov and place an order with Pizza Hut, who reportedly delivers to space. This historic feat was achieved by Pizza Hut in 2001, when they sent a pizza to the International Space Station (ISS) aboard a resupply rocket. Although the delivery was largely a publicity stunt costing over one million dollars, it required careful planning to execute successfully.
To account for the dulled taste buds of astronauts in space, the pizza was specially seasoned with extra salt, and pepperoni was replaced with salami due to the latter's ability to preserve well during the required 60-day test. After the pizza arrived at the ISS, Usachov was captured on camera joyfully consuming a slice. However, the U.S. crew was not allowed to partake in the pizza due to NASA's policy against advertisements on their spacecraft.
It is unclear whether the Russian crew consumed the pizza in front of their American counterparts, but we can only imagine the possibility.
