10 Best Documentaries On Space

Some TV series are worth binging, whether they are based in reality or are purely fictional. Of course, any TV series based on space is our favourite and we like both fiction and non-fiction.

Whether for pure escapism or to learn something new about the universe that we inhabit, space-based TV shows are just the best.



We have gone through our favourites for you so we could list them here. There’s a mix of fiction and non-fiction, and some of these you have undoubtedly heard of while others will completely new to you. Either way, enjoy our top 10 TV series based on space.


1. Red Dwarf - 1988 - 2019

Pretty much only the British can make the end of the human race funny. Dave Lister, an inept crew member aboard the mining ship Red Dwarf, is held in stasis for disobeying orders - he wakes 3 million years later, to find himself alone in the universe. Almost.


Did you know?

One episode was an animated Christmas Special, where the crew encounter a deep space Santa - very few people have seen it though because it was exclusive to a mobile phone service provider.



2. Wonders of the Universe - 2011 / 4 episodes

As part of the ‘Wonders’ series of documentaries, there are just 4 episodes here. Presented by the wonderful Professor Brian Cox, Wonders of the Universe is an incredible ‘must see’.

Before ‘becoming’ a physicist, Professor Brian Cox had fame in the 1990s, playing the keyboard in the band D:Ream.

3. Through the Wormhole - 2010 - 2017

62 episodes in total and narrated by no other than Morgan Freeman. The series explores the mysteries that have weighed on humanity’s mind since we had minds - what are we made of? what came before the beginning? And many more besides.

4. Doctor Who - 1963 - present

One of the longest-running TV shows, Doctor Who was cancelled and then revived twice. Following the adventures of a Timelord through time and space, the Doctor travels in his TARDIS (a spaceship capable of time travel) with his companions.

5. Space - 2001 / 6 episodes

A brilliantly presented, and visually stunning, mini-series about… well, Space. Presented by Sam Neill, in a way that only he can narrate, Space is informative and engaging.

Sam Neill has narrated several documentaries, including ‘New Zealand: Earth's Mythical Islands’.



6  Fabric of the Cosmos - 2011 - 2012

Based on the book of the same name, by physicist Brian Greene, Fabric of the Cosmos explores the notion that time may be an illusion. The series takes us 50 years into the future, then uses a wormhole to go back into the past to try and explain the concept.

Brian Greene was a Pulitzer Prize finalist for the nonfiction category.



7. Firefly - 2002 - 2003

The much-loved, and cancelled before its time, Firefly ran for just one season before being axed. Set 500 years in the future, a renegade group of travellers try to survive unknown parts of the galaxy while trying to avoid warring factions.



Did you know?

14 episodes of Firefly were produced, but only 11 saw the light of day.


8 Cosmos - 1980 - 13 episodes

9. Cosmos: A Spacetime Odyssey - 2014 - 13 episodes

Presented by astrophysicist Neil deGrasse Tyson, this is a documentary series that looks at how mankind discovered the laws of nature and how we found our coordinates in space and time.



Did you know?

Tyson was awarded the NASA Distinguished Public Service Medal in 2004, and he once considered becoming an exotic dancer.



10 The Universe: Explore the Edges of the Unknown - 2007 - 2015

This series explores a lot of scientific questions and topics concerning the universe -the Sun, planets, black holes, The Big Bang etc. - using CGI, interviews with scientists and gathered data.



Did you know?

The majority of season one is focused primarily on the Solar System, and an unimaginably large part of observable space.
