Many people wonder whether female astronauts wear bras in space and what purpose they serve. According to NASA astronaut with over 30 years of experience, female astronauts generally wear bras in space, not for support, but for comfort and modesty. Cameras are placed all over the space station, and the bras can help protect their privacy from male astronauts. However, bras also serve other useful purposes for female astronauts in space.
Have you ever wondered why female astronauts wear bras in space? It turns out that there are several reasons why they choose to do so. One of the main reasons is to prevent inertia and provide coverage. Female astronauts typically wear sports bras, which offer more comfort, compression, and are more suitable for space.
Wearing a sports bra in space has many benefits. Although there is no noticeable pull from gravity, there is still inertia that can cause discomfort or even pain if not properly supported. Additionally, sports bras help prevent chafing during physical activities and protect modesty from cameras and male astronauts. So, it makes sense for female astronauts to opt for this type of undergarment while in space.
“In micro-gravity on board the International Space Station (ISS) I can only speak from observation and not personal experience. Women typically wear athletically designed “sports bras” during their workout sessions (2.5 hrs/day, using combinations of a treadmill, stationary bicycle and weight machine called ARED (Advanced Resistive Exercise Device) on ISS, and often wear similar undergarments during the work day. To my knowledge, and having flown with four different females during my two missions in space, I recall no comments or observations of them having any type of special challenges or experiences in zero gravity.”
