While sex in space may be a popular topic in fiction, NASA strictly prohibits it due to concerns about the potential risks to reproductive health and the unborn fetus in microgravity. In an interview with The Daily Beast, space health experts explained that the ban is in place to prevent pregnancy, as experiments with invertebrates and insects have shown limited success with offspring in orbit.

Radiation and microgravity effects on the fetus

Although human conception in space is biologically possible, experts warn that the risks of microgravity and radiation could cause significant harm, and potentially even death, to a fetus. Therefore, NASA upholds the ban on sexual relations and conception in space.

Biological challenges

We still have limited knowledge on how space affects adult human bodies. However, the available data suggests that space is generally hazardous for human health. Microgravity has a strong impact on astronauts, particularly during long-term missions, causing muscle tissue and bone density loss. It also has adverse effects on blood circulation, although it can lead to some positive outcomes such as improved sexual arousal.

According to Simon Dube, a researcher and space sexologist at the Kinsey Institute, former NASA astronaut Mike Mullane claimed that he once woke up with an erection that was "able to drill through kryptonite." However, Jonathan Miller, a NASA engineer with more than three decades of experience, highlighted the challenges of having sex in microgravity. Miller stated that sex in space is overhyped, as it is challenging to perform due to the lack of privacy, limited positions, and constant need for support.

Etiquette and Privacy

Sweating becomes more significant in microgravity, as humans tend to perspire more in this environment. However, in a weightless environment, droplets of sweat and even semen do not fall to the ground, but rather float around as spheres. This can make cleanup a less-than-romantic process.

In addition to physical health, maintaining good mental health is crucial for astronauts on long-term missions. Disrupted relationships can have serious consequences for everyone on board, potentially even endangering lives. Furthermore, personal and interpersonal tensions may undermine the integrity of experiments. In space, there is no option to simply "go home and forget about it," so managing these issues effectively is essential. Counteracting the gradual loss of bone and muscle mass requires daily exercise, but attending to mental health is just as important.
